Frequently asked questions about Trazodone

Why is this medication prescribed?

Trazodone is used to treat depression. Trazodone is in a class of medications called serotonin modulators. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

How should this medicine be used?

Trazodone comes as a tablet to take by mouth. The tablet is usually taken with a meal or light snack two or more times a day. To help you remember to take trazodone, take it around the same time(s) every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take trazodone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it, take it more often, or take it for a longer time than prescribed by your doctor.

How long does it take for Trazodone to work?

Trazodone may start to relieve depression 1 to 2 weeks after you begin taking it, but it can take up to 6 weeks for the full benefit of the medication to set in.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Trazodone?

  • Symptoms of your condition that bother you most
  • If you have thoughts of suicide or harming yourself
  • Medications you have taken in the past for your condition, whether they were effective or caused any adverse effects
  •  If you experience side effects from your medications, discuss them with your provider. Some side effects may pass with time, but others may require an adjustment in the medication.
  • Any other psychiatric or medical problems you have, including a history of bipolar disorder
  • All other medications you are currently taking and any medication allergies you have. This will help your prescriber assess for potential drug interactions.
  • Other non-medication treatment you are receiving (such as psychotherapy (i.e., talk therapy) or substance abuse treatment). Your provider can explain how these different treatments work with the medication.
  • If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
  • If you drink alcohol or use drugs

What are common side effects?

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, changes in appetite or weight, weakness or tiredness, nervousness, dizziness or lightheadedness, nightmares, muscle pain, dry mouth, rash, sexual problems in males; decreased sex drive, inability to get or keep an erection, or delayed or absent ejaculation, sexual problems in females; decreased sex drive, or delayed orgasm or unable to have an orgasm, uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body, stuffy nose, tired, red, or itchy eyes
